1946 Chevrolet 1/2-Ton Truck: Ground-Up Chassis & Underfloor Brake Restoration

What is the best way to upgrade the suspension and braking system on a classic 1946 Chevrolet 1/2-ton truck while keeping stock wheels?

The most effective way to modernize a vintage 1946 Chevy truck requires executing an underfloor frame-mounted power brake assembly paired with a specialized 5-bolt or 6-bolt disc brake conversion kit. This system allows for the integration of modern stopping power and improved steering geometry without requiring alterations to the vehicle’s factory outer wheel aesthetics.

  • Project Focus: Full Chassis Restoration, Underfloor Frame-Mounted Power Brake Upgrade, & Steering Rebuild.
  • Facility Tooling Utilized: High-capacity vertical air compressors, dry-media blasting cabinets, down-draft painting booth, and heavy-duty frame welding equipment.

Phase 1: Separation, Sandblasting, and Structural Evaluation

The restoration began by lifting the vintage sheet metal cab and wood-bed assembly off the rolling chassis. Decades of heavy scale rust and road debris were cleared away by rolling the bare frame into our dry-media blasting booth. The frame was stripped down to a raw, factory-white steel state to check the condition of the original leaf spring mounts and crossmembers for cracks or structural fatigue.

Phase 2: Underfloor Frame-Mounted Power Brake Fabrication

Because the owner preferred a clean firewall look, we integrated a custom underfloor mounting option directly to the frame rail.

  • Master Cylinder Setup: We fabricated a heavy-duty frame bracket to house a dual-reservoir master cylinder and power brake booster combo complete with a matching floor brake pedal.
  • Residual Valves: To prevent fluid from siphoning back out of the lines down into the master cylinder, we plumbed inline residual pressure valves (2-lb valves for the front/rear disc brake configuration) into the hard lines.

Phase 3: Suspension Rebuild & Disc Brake Conversion

To ensure a smooth, dependable ride while retaining the truck’s classic stance, the suspension and steering linkages were completely overhauled:

  • Component Overhaul: Every leaf spring bushing, shackle, and kingpin assembly was replaced with all-new high-durability components.
  • Disc Brake Retrofitting: We fitted a custom front disc brake conversion kit explicitly designed to match the original factory 6-bolt wheel hub pattern. This allowed the truck to gain modern multi-piston stopping power while allowing the factory steel wheels to clear the calipers flawlessly.

Phase 4: Industrial Sealing, Line Plumbing, & Final Cab Alignment

The raw, repaired steel frame was sealed using a commercial-grade, high-solids rust-preventative epoxy primer to ensure lifelong corrosion defense. New hand-bent, heavy-gauge steel brake and fuel lines were hard-routed along the inner frame channels. Following a complete mechanical verification phase, the restored truck cab and bed assemblies were precision-aligned and permanently fastened back to the modernized chassis using all-new hardware.
